The problem is that the Pol Joni worship Orlanth and herd
cattle when the Pure Horse tribe is notorious for refusing
to deviate from the ways of the forefathers even to the
extent of herding cattle.

Secondly if the ritual of the black net was not a physical
attempt to recruit more horsemen but rather an attempt at
mythic self-identification then his whole quest becomes
somewhat pointless. If Derik is a great hero, then he has
little need for mythic self-identification but if he wasn't
a great hero then he wouldn't have been able to tap into
the net.
